PMC now using AI to monitor cleanliness, garbage disposal across city
Prayagraj: Authorities of the Prayagraj Municipal Corporation (PMC) are fast adopting use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for extensive monitoring of cleanliness and garbage disposal exercises across Sangam city.
Officials claimed that AI has undoubtedly helped authorities to improve garbage collection monitoring through real-time data analysis and predictive modelling, leading to more efficient routes, optimised resource allocation, and reduced environmental impact. AI-powered sensors and cameras, integrated with the Internet of Things (IoT), can track bin fill levels, detect illegal dumping, and even identify specific waste types for better sorting. This data, analysed by AI algorithms, can optimise collection schedules, predict future waste generation, and ultimately contribute to a more sustainable waste management system.
Furthermore, to make the city clean and environmentally friendly, the Prayagraj Municipal Corporation is also ensuring pollution-free disposal of its solid waste along with garbage collection from thousands of homes. Additional Municipal Commissioner (PMC) Deependra Yadav says, "Door-to-door garbage collection exercise is being carried out across the city in order to keep city streets and lanes clean." He added, "We are using AI-based monitoring of all such exercises, and for that, a control room has also been set up at the PMC's Smart City Building."
"With the help of AI, the sweeping of roads, removal of garbage, tracking of garbage collection vehicles, and door-to-door garbage collection vehicles are also being monitored at the control room," said Yadav, adding, "Apart from monitoring, city sweeping, public toilets, and solid waste processing, as well as information about garbage heaps, dirt, or other cleanliness-related problems, are also being resolved promptly. Currently, monitoring of a total of 1,200 vehicles of Prayagraj Municipal Corporation is being uninterruptedly done at the control room.
PMC officials claimed that over 200 tons of wet waste is generated every day from homes, hotels, restaurants and temples in Sangam city. Now, 21,500 kg of bio CNG and 200 tons of organic manure are also going to be made from the same every day. For this, a CNG biogas plant has been set up in Arail. The total capacity of this plant is 343 tons per day. Every day, 21.5 tons of bio-CNG, along with 100 tons of solid organic manure and 100 tons of liquid organic manure, have started being made from the plant.
In the first phase, the work of making bio CNG from urban waste of 200 tons capacity was completed. The work of making gas from the remaining 143 tonnes of paddy straw and cow dung is in progress. The biogas project will benefit 45,000 domestic consumers as well as farmers. Besides, the PMC will save about Rs 5 crore annually, and over 200 people are given employment to run the project.
